Well, motorbikes. Which is what I’ll start on then I’ll get to the butterflies.

On Friday, Engels motorbike died. We knew that she had begun to slowly mechanically deteriorate, as all things do with wear and tear and the lovely state of British roads. She was a work horse of a motorbike and did a 40 mile round commute everyday in sun, sleet and snow. So when she died, Engel was left in a rather awkward predicament or requiring a motorbike to commute to work, as he cant feasibly get there via public transport, as fast as possible but with no actual savings to get one.

Yesterday (Saturday) we called upon a few favours and managed to get someone with motorbike know how to, firstly, breathe a few more last breaths into the old motorbike, and then go with Engel to kick some tyres and find a replacement. It was a long day, and I ended up driving for a total of 4 hours (but there was lots of doggy cuddles, four huskies and a collie!), but a new lovely lady of a motorbike was found and we just have to get Engels poor workhorse of a motorbike to last a few more days until everything is in place to get the new one.

Not going into any great details, but I now have a motorbike to pay off, so I’m officially reopening commissions – since Felix was born I’ve pretty much only been making things upon request for  friends and family (and work colleagues, as Yorrick is proof of) but as of now, anyone can request one. Full details on the commissions page.

I’m curious to see what requests get made, I’ve had quite a few interesting ones in the past – life sized knitted recreations of peoples pets, items from games or movies, a knitted womb that would double as a purse… (that last one wasn’t made in the end, after it was explained to me that it was going to be a ‘congratulations on your hysterectomy’ gift, I didn’t feel it would go down well and I do like to think I have a pretty dark sense of humour)

Now, onto the butterflies!

Felix has asked for a ‘mini beasts’ birthday this year (for those wondering what a mini beast is, its now the ‘correct’ term for creepy crawlies, insects, bugs etc – schools didn’t feel it fair on the insects to cast a negative light on them by calling them creepy). Her birthday isn’t until September but I figured that insects would make nice, small, travel sized knits.

So I started with butterflies…

Using the pattern Common Blue Butterfly by Lesley Stanfield from her book 100 Flowers to Knit & Crochet

I made a lot of butterflies.

But they were so good for using up scraps…

And using my hand dyed wool…

Oh, and I needed moths too!

After realising there was about 50, or maybe more, of the things I decided I had to make myself stop and choose a new insect for travel knitting. When I finish with that one, I’ll do another post like this one!

I’m going to go and get back to knitting some socks now (a very ‘normal’ knit for me I must say!) and working out which husky pattern to cast on next as a thank you for the motorbike friend…

Now where to start?

No knitting to show this week as working on a surprise mystery project! I know what it’s supposed to be, but we’ll all have to wait to see if it turns out the way it’s supposed to! If it does, I’ll post the pattern, if not…oh well…

As for the motorbike part of this blog post, Felix finally got her first taste on daddy’s motorbike at the ripe age of ‘very nearly five!’ I made sure Engel knew very, very, very well what the consequences would be if he wasn’t super careful with my most precious cargo…

But I needn’t have worried. They both came back fine, so fine that she demanded another go right away! So glad I invested in a full set of miniature bike gear (jacket with spine guard, trousers, gloves and helmet) though she looks so tiny in it!

And for those questioning the legality of this decision, in the UK the only restriction for a pillion is that their feet must touch the foot pegs, which, depending on the motorbike, ranges from those with short legs to long legs! It’s also perfectly legal to adjust or modify the foot pegs too!  Engel is now planning all sorts of trips out with her.

I can feel my hair turning grey at the thought…

The only other thing to comment on really is that after much persuasion (bullying? Peer pressure?) I have joined Instagram. I’ll post the photos from my weekly blog posts on it, perhaps some knits in progress and on Thursdays my old blog posts till I’m all caught up.

Don’t be surprised if some of Felix’s creations end up sneaking into it though!

Oh, and the Hot Flash Dash’ cheer for this week?

2, 4, 6, 8!
Your all doing great!
1, 3, 5, 9!
Your projects are looking fine!

Till next week!

Hi all,

Apologies for not posting last week – been having a number of security issues. Some of you may remember that I had to take down my site a few years ago, strip it and start again because some moron with too much time hacked into it.

Since then, I’ve learned. As such, I’ve had no issues until the last fortnight where I’ve been getting multiple failed attempts of people trying to log in, judging by the times, it’s an automatic system but still, it’s irritating.

Why anyone wants to hack a knitting blog of very low notoriety I don’t know, but there you have it.

So rather than blogging, I’ve been beefing up my security, again, as I do not want to start this site over again.

Now that my rant is done, cute turtle time!

It’s based on a free online pattern called ‘Duuuude, the sea turtle‘ by Cheezombie. Only changes are the front flippers and the eyes. It’s super cute and works up fast – I actually have an army of them forming! I think there’s 14 last count, but I lost track after the fifth one.

There’s been so many turtles I’ve used up five balls of wool! OK, they were all partial balls, between 15-30g but I just started on a full 100g one so let’s see how many turtles i get out of a full ball!

Unless I get bored. in which case I have an alarmingly long list of things I fancy making!

Till next post.

A week ago today, after 30 hours of labour and an emergency c-section, little Felix was born. She came earlier than expected, and is rather small (only 2.29kg at birth, that’s about 5lb for the imperialists out there.)

Just letting you all know I’m a mum now and that things here just got a bit more hectic, and probably sparodic!

Hopefully it’ll even out as I figure out how lifer works all over again!

As mentioned in my last post, Engel and myself have a house! We moved in more or less about three weeks ago and currently still up to our ears in boxes, but the unpacking is getting there! And the sorting! And building of furniture! And all the other things that come with a house – like setting up gas, electricity, paying bills…

Enough with the boring stuff.

Jin Chan chilling on his new pad.

I’ve finally found my camera and can get on with photographing my various knits. Above is a little house knit I did – because even amongst the chaos of moving, I thought it could do with a little knitted touch. So Jin Chan got himself his very own knitted pad, water lily pad mind you. (Pattern can be found here.) For those curious, Jin Chan is the three legged frog, or money frog, associated with wealth and good luck. I could do with both! A wiki article can be found just here.

What else has been happening? Well whilst Engel and myself where in house limbo, we were staying with the in-laws. Sabrina (one of the foster kitties) took a rather unhealthy obsession to ‘playing’ with plants. Eight cacti and four orchids later…yeah…it wouldn’t have been so bad if it wasn’t for her pulling the plant out and ripping the roots apart – broken pots and chewed leaves can result in a saved plant, but the roots? Nope.

Cat-proof cactus

So as an apology, I knitted up a cactus that could survive even Sabrina – break the pot? No problem. Roots? There aren’t any. Chewed leaves? Off to the washing machine! (Pattern can be found here for anyone else who could do with one!)

It’s late so I’m going to leave it at that, but expect a few more image heavy, full of knitted item, posts coming your way!

On the way to the house this morning Engel and I realised something.

You are expecting a workman at between 10am and 2pm.  If you turn up at the house  late then you will have missed the workman.  If you turn up on time he won’t turn up until after 2pm.  Thus the workman is in a state of quantum flux both being late and early whilst on the journey to the house.  Whether he is dead or not is another matter however.

Quantum physics was never my strong point but being able to describe wave particle duality using workmen at 8 in the morning is quite impressive.  Needless to say the workman turned up at 12:15 as soon as lunch came out of the oven, that’s just sod’s law.

Update: We have a house now! And as of 12:30, internet. Its just taken me over six and a half hours to find a spare moment to tell you all this.

Once a year, everyone who owns a motorbike is encouraged to pop on and ride to work, even though I don’t personally own a license or motorbike (Engels the rider, I’m the driver, though I hope to change that!) I do usually spend most of today watching out for all the pretty motorbikes…

So far, I’m on thirteen, and seeing as that’s only my half hour commutes into work and back, not bad going.

Of the thirteen, Engels wasn’t one of them. He’s currently in a bit too much pain after his weekend of motocross – dirt biking to the majority. So lots of wet grass, muddy slopes, jumps and twisty turns on a kind of bike he’s never been on…needless to say he came off a few times, no major injuries barring bruises, scrapes and a hurt pride. The aches and pains stopped him from hopping on his bike this morning however…

I’ll admit I was desperate to have a shot on the dirt biking myself, and there was an option for complete novices who’d never rode before, but I wasn’t allowed on account of carrying a kitten of my own at the moment…

In hindsight, I’m glad. Not one person didn’t come flying off, and a few people were seriously hurt. The fact they had an ambulance on standby was a giveaway that even though this is a ‘fun’ sport, its one that carries its risks. So I happily munched on my double portion of cheesy chips (eating for two, according to the very nice chipvan owner as he gave me extra for free) and watched.

How I wish I had my camera for when Engel ended up in a three bike dogpile…

In regards to site updates, comments have been finally enabled – hopefully I wont have the same issues as last time with spam then malware…

Oh, and thanks to all the people who emailed and/or got in touch via Ravelry regarding how things are going and the patterns finally coming back online – I do like to hear from you all occasionally!

Had another busy week (both real life and online) and managed to get a few more things back up and running for the site!

My sister Rabbie, aka themagpiesnest, whose knitted (and sewn, and baked) goodies can be found here, or her blog over here, asked me to host two of her patterns which are now back online for people to use and make!

So here they are, a B-Bomb pattern and a Kirby pattern! Whats better, they’re both free!

Firstly, Crumble complained that Salem and Sabrina were receiving too much attention and that she should have her photo posted.

The gorgeous Crumble cat.

Now that I’ve finished bowing to the cats every demand, on to my readers/watchers/followers commands!

Both the Axolotl pattern and the Companion Cube pattern are back online! They’ve had some revising done to them, mostly to make things more self explanatory and to try and iron out a few issues… These and all other free patterns I get round to digging out, dusting off and typing up will and can be found on the Free Patterns page.

Lastly, I’ve put a link on the menu bar (look at the top of the page, there’s one for the Free Patterns too) to my DA gallery. I’m hoping to eventually have a gallery on here of my knitted things, or something similar, but its pretty intensive work and I’m currently far too lazy/busy/tired. If anyone has any suggestions however…you can get in touch via the new Contact page! (Also in the menu bar)

More to come soon! Hopefully…

Hello world!

Due to all the problems with wordpress, hosting and generally laziness we’ve decided to reboot the foxymitts website.

So coming soon. a whole new foxymitts look and content… maybe.

Patterns and the old content will be restored as soon as possible but due to off-line commitments we’re not sure how long this will be.

Salem and Sabrina will be ensuring work gets done to their standards.
